About US
GAD Art & Fabrication is a family owned and operated metal fabrication studio that focuses on creating unique works of art, handcrafted furniture and architectural elements for a variety of designers.
Led by Gonzalo Algarate, with over 40 years of hands on experience in the metal fabrication industry and is joined by his son and daughter, the team at GAD aims to produce a diverse body of work that bridges fine art and fabrication, offering a unique visual language rooted in material knowledge, craft tradition, and an enduring curiosity for form and surface. Their approach of combining traditional craftsmanship paired with consistent, detail-oriented workflow is what truly differentiates them within the modern metal fabrication landscape. As trained artists rather than strictly industrial fabricators, they bring an artist’s eye for form, composition and surface — blending utility and refined aesthetic — a quality that many clients find rare. Whether it’s a one of a kind sculpture, precision architectural element, or functional everyday piece, every project is made to reflect not only their craft, but the people and environments they’re made for.
Born in Uruguay, Gonzalo emigrated to the United States in 1984, beginning a decades-long career in metal and large-scale sculpture. For nearly twenty years, Gonzalo worked under the apprenticeship of the renowned artist Robert Graham, beginning with mastering the art of the lost wax process, casting and finishes on large numbers of work in bronze. Under Graham, he contributed to numerous public monuments, civic sculptures, and private commissions that shaped his expertise in patinas, and metal fabrication overall.
Following his tenure with Graham, he continued developing his craft as an assistant to contemporary sculptor Brad Howe before establishing GAD Art & Fabrication in Los Angeles.
As the backbone of GAD Art & Fabrication, Gonzalo’s independent practice blends sculptural sensibility with painterly experimentation, often drawing on the techniques and surface treatments he mastered over years of working with bronze and other metals. His paintings and mixed-media works frequently echo the layered patinas, textures, and dimensionality of his sculptural background.
Co-owner of GAD Art & Fabrication, Daniella brings a problem-solving approach allowing for customizable fabrication that respects both design intent and practical function. Focusing primarily on finish treatments, she blends contemporary surface design with traditional patina processes allowing for a diverse collection of handcrafted artisanal surface options. With a commitment to meet client expectations, she treats metal surfaces with meticulous care - aiming to maintain tonal consistency - while embracing metal’s natural tendency to oxidize and evolve over time. Behind the scenes, she oversees the studio’s operations - from connecting with clients, keeping projects on schedule, photographing fabrication processes, and handling both web design and social media.
Daniella attended The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, earning her BFA in Fiber and Materials Study in 2014, where she focused on both contemporary and traditional weaving practices before transitioning to metal.
In addition to her role at GAD, Daniella designs and fabricates her own sculptural work as an independent artist. If you would like to learn more about her art practice, please visit www.dalgarate.com
Apart from his role as a secondary metal fabricator, Marcelo develops complex design concepts that support the fabrication process and play an important role in shaping the studio’s purpose. Using his previous experience in graphic design, he utilizes Adobe Illustrator to create preliminary shop drawings and visual concepts before moving into CAD. He generates detailed renderings and three-dimension prototypes using modeling programs such as Rhino and Fusion 360 that guide each project from concept to final execution. As a key contributor behind the studio’s engineering workflow, he ensures that each piece is structurally sound without sacrificing the artistic vision of their client’s original design. His hands-on experience of the building process enables him to combine structural intuition, precision, and early-stage problem solving before production begins.
From renderings to metal-work — he strives to cultivate adaptability, interdisciplinary thinking, and an ongoing desire to explore how digital visualizations and evolving fabrication techniques can reshape contemporary artisanal practice within the design world.
Marcelo’s studies involve film, graphic design, and sound engineering, graduating with honors from the LA Film School in 2014.
